M. Night Shyamalan's first film with Nicholas Sparks opens on Valentine's Day

Remain, the first film to pair M. Night Shyamalan with Nicholas Sparks, opens in US theaters on February 5, 2027. Warner Bros. originally set the film for October 23, 2026, the kind of date that signals a thriller, before moving it to Valentine's Day. The studio pointed to the film's romantic storyline and to test scores it called the highest of Shyamalan's career, ahead of The Sixth Sense and Signs.

The film pairs Shyamalan with Nicholas Sparks for the first time. Shyamalan wrote and directed from a story the two developed together, which Sparks also turned into a novel that hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list in October 2025. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Tate, an architect recently discharged from psychiatric care, who travels to a small town on Cape Cod to design a house and meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor, a woman who pulls him back toward life and into a mystery the town has been sitting on. Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Ashley Walters and Tracy Ifeachor round out the cast. Adolpho Veloso, Oscar nominated this year for Train Dreams, shot the film, with James Newton Howard composing the score.

Why it matters
The date change says more than the film itself can at this stage. An October release would have sold Remain as a thriller, which is the genre Shyamalan's name has meant for two decades. A February release sells the same film as a love story first. That is a studio betting its marketing on the Sparks half of the project rather than the Shyamalan half, backed by numbers it considers strong enough to justify the choice.

It also raises the real question going into next year. Shyamalan built a career on the turn, the moment a film reveals it was never what it looked like. Sparks built his on earning an emotional ending honestly. A film positioned as a romance from a director known for pulling the rug out has a built in tension, and whichever instinct wins out will decide what kind of film Remain actually turns out to be.
