Our Story
Back in 1997 I walked into a video rental place for the first time. I still remember that tiny booth, two by two meters, where an older man in glasses handed out tapes for a day at a time. That was the moment I made my first real choice as a viewer, and I picked some film with Steven Seagal. The next day I was already telling friends in the yard they had to see it. I didn't start working in cinema professionally until 2011, but I was always the person who could point a friend toward a film.
Once cinema became my profession, the demand for recommendations around me grew on its own, since I was getting through several hundred films a year and building up a real eye, not just as a viewer but through the lens of a director.
Time passed, and the world filled up with more cinema than anyone can take in. Every single day we all run into the same question — what do we watch? And every year that question gets harder to answer. Dozens of streaming services, thousands of films a year. How do you make out the thing that's truly meant for you in all of that.
Plenty of services and apps offer you wonderful selections, films acclaimed by critics, by audiences, by some important person. But the one thing that matters most is missing from all of it. There's no room in there for you as an individual viewer.
This is where our product comes in — One Film. My team and I built our own system, one with many layers, working toward a single goal: to understand your taste. At the heart of it is a library we're always expanding. It holds both recognized classics and big crowd favorites. But what we treasure most are the films that may have slipped past audiences while staying extraordinarily powerful. We seek those out on purpose and give them back the attention they deserve. We take all of that range and narrow it down to one film, chosen for you. Our algorithm does this remarkably well, and every rating you give feeds it what it needs, so that each next film we offer lands closer to the mark and builds a viewer's path that is truly your own.
