Our Take

CODA is the kind of film where you know, by the laws of the genre, that it's all going to end with a happy ending, and yet the empathy you feel for the characters makes you live their journey right alongside them and go through a huge wave of very different emotions. And in the end you're reminded once again that what matters most is not the destination but the road. Maybe that's exactly why we love rewatching films even when we know the ending by heart.

The film tells the story of a young girl growing up in a family of deaf parents and a deaf brother. Because fate gave her an ordinary life and the ability to hear, her life turns out to be anything but ordinary. She has to be the main support and, of course, the interpreter for the people she loves, whose future seems, at first glance, to rest entirely on their daughter. But of course no one asked what she actually wants for herself, and even less so, for obvious reasons, can her parents hear the singular voice of their daughter, a voice like an angel's.

This is a story about growing up and about the ties between people. And of course the theme of communication made difficult by deafness is only a tool here. The real problem runs much deeper. Because no matter who our parents are, they will most likely want the best for us, but in their own way. And how soon we manage to find our own path and our own identity depends only on the core inside us. And a little on the people around us, the ones who can plant faith in us and show us what we're truly capable of.
