Our Take
What if we got the chance at one more life, but all memory of the last one was wiped clean? Would the same fundamental beliefs still sit at the core of who we are, about good and evil, love and hatred, life and death? And what exactly is this "we" in the first place? This is the question Edson Oda raises in his film Nine Days.
He tells the fantastical story of a man tasked with receiving newly arrived souls and guiding them through a nine-day trial, to decide who earns a place in the world and who is sent back into nonexistence. Alongside this, he's trying to solve the mystery of one particular girl: he watched over her life for years, and it ended under circumstances he never saw coming.
Through the mystical, deeply intimate life of this examiner, we explore, step by step, human choices and the chains of decisions that shape who we become. And most of all, this story finds a strange, beautiful way of pointing us toward what truly matters in life, and why every day, every breath, is a gift whose worth we sometimes only understand too late.
